AC - Alternating current, air condition(ing)/(er)
AFCI - Arc-fault circuit interrupter
ATS - Automatic transfer switch - used to switch power from one source to another automatically in case of emergency power outages. Typically connected between the power lines and a generator.
BTU - British thermal unit
CIP - Clean in place - generally used in food manufacturing/
CMMS - Computerized maintenance management software
DC - Direct current
EMT - Electrical metallic tubing
EPA - Environmental Protection Agency
Grounded Conductor- A current-carrying conductor that is intentionally connected to the ground. In the USA it is gray or white. Alternatively, the conductor can be marked with 3 continuous stripes of gray or white, as long as the conductor isn't green. This is what people commonly refer to as the neutral wire.
Grounding Conductor- A conductor does not carry current under normal conditions. This is considered your safety wire. It can be bare metal, green, or green with yellow stripes in the USA. It allows current to flow during a fault condition. This is what people commonly refer to as the ground wire.
HMI - Human Machine Interface
Hz - Hertz
I/O - Input Output
LOTO - Lock out tag out
MDR - Motor driven roller
NEC - National Electrical code
OCPD - Over current protection device - fuses and circuit breakers mostly.
PLC - Programmable Logic Controller - the 'brain' of machines and plants.
PM - Preventative maintenance
PSI - Pounds per square inch
RMC - Rigid metallic conduit
SOP - Standard operating procedure
TXV - Thermostatic expansion valve
Ungrounded Conductor- A current-carrying conductor that is separated and/or insulated from the ground and other objects not intended to have contact. These are commonly referred to as hot wires.
VAC - Volts alternating current
VDC - Volts direct current
VFD - Variable frequency drive - used to control the speed and direction of AC motors.
